The 2nd Micronesian Medical Symposium was a tremendous success; it brought together world authorities in the healthcare field from 10 different countries and guests in the form of grants from 15 neighboring Islands. The Guam Medical Society in partnership with Guam Memorial Hospital, University of Guam and University of Guam Endowment Foundation and Micronesian Institute for Disease Prevention and research will be co-organizing the 3rd Micronesian Medical Symposium, “Enhancing Pacific Partnerships for Health,” which will be held on October 19-21, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The symposium will provide up to 20 credit hours of continuing medical education to all physician participants. This great international symposium will include world-renowned authorities from the National Institute of Health, Centers for Disease Control, John’s Hopkins University, the National University of Taiwan, Australia, the Philippines, Canada and HealthCare leaders of the Pacific Islands who will speak and share of their experiences with the participants.

This year’s focus will be on the Childhood / Adolescent Obesity and related diseases which is not only an Asia Pacific Epidemic but also a world wide Epidemic with approximately 22 million children under 5 years of age are over weight.

This conference is the first of its kind, focusing on epidemiology and public Health approach to the childhood & adolescent obesity epidemic in Asia Pacific Region. Novel approaches in the prevention and treatment of this epidemic will be highlighted in this conference. Presentations and the key scientific topics will span the full spectrum of Endocrinology, Cardiology, Cancer, Nutrition, Diabetes & Kidney Disease, Genetics; Social and Behavioral impacts of obesity will be discussed.

Complimentary to the symposium will be the official booklet of the Micronesian Medical Symposium, which will cover the symposium program, scientific articles and abstracts, perspectives, editorials and advertisements. We intend to publish over 500 copies of the Booklet of Micronesian Symposium.Additionally, Again the Symposium will be awarding up to 100 travel grants totaling $100,000 to regional healthcare professionals.

We hope to create and accomplish a framework for shared HealthCare Dialogue, promote professional networking and regional alliances and, also, promote regional research activities in the discipline of medicine and related fields. Such educational activities will enhance the public awareness of the burden of disease in the Pacific, which will lead to the betterment of HealthCare for all people in the Pacific Islands.
